Faithful Focus: Cultivating Trust in God's Guidance

In this study, we'll explore the importance of faith in trusting God's guidance, and how fear can hinder faithfulness. We'll also examine the significance of humility in maintaining a faithful focus and apply the example of Jesus walking on water to our own spiritual journey.

Scripture Reading and Analysis

Matthew 14:28-31 says, "Peter answered him, 'Lord, if it's you, command me to come to you on the water.' He said, 'Come.' So Peter got out of the boat and started walking on the water towards Jesus. But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he became afraid and started to sink. But Jesus reached out and caught him, saying, 'You of little faith, why did you doubt?' And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased."

Hebrews 11:6 states, "And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him."

Romans 12:3 says, "For by the standard of God's glorious gospel, I am a mere nobody—a chief of sinners. But by the standard of the gospel, Christ is all and in all and beyond all—eternally glorious! So let us not think more highly of ourselves than we ought to think; but rather think so as to have a sound mind, even as God assigned our place for each one of us."

Luke 17:6 says, "If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, 'Go up and knock yourself over in the sea; it will obey you!' If you say to this mulberry tree, 'Be pulled up by its roots and planted in the sea; it will obey you!'

Main Teaching

In this passage, Peter asks Jesus if he can walk on water, and Jesus responds with a simple 'come.' Peter takes a step of faith and begins to walk on the water. However, when he sees the strong wind and waves, his fear takes over, and he starts to sink. Jesus reaches out and catches him, scolding him for his lack of faith.

This passage highlights the importance of faith in trusting God's guidance. Peter's initial faith allowed him to take that first step of obedience, but his fear caused him to doubt. This is a common struggle we face in our own lives. We may start with a sense of faith and trust in God's guidance, but fear and doubt can creep in.

The Bible teaches us that without faith it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6). Faith is not just a feeling or an emotional response; it is a choice to trust in God's character and promises. When we choose to trust in God's sovereignty, we can find stability and peace in the midst of uncertainty.

The example of Jesus walking on water can be applied to our own spiritual journey. When we face challenges or doubts, we can choose to trust in God's guidance and sovereignty. We can take small steps of obedience, even when it seems impossible or frightening. And when we do, we can experience the peace and stability that comes from knowing that God is with us.

Discussion Questions

  • How do you typically respond when faced with uncertainty or fear? Do you tend to trust in God's guidance or let your fears dictate your actions?
  • What are some specific areas in your life where you struggle with doubt or unbelief? How can you apply the example of Peter walking on water to those areas?
  • How do you think Jesus' rebuke of Peter for his lack of faith relates to our own struggles with doubt? What does this say about our relationship with God?

Key Points

  • Faith is not just an emotional response but a choice to trust in God's character and promises.
  • Without faith it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6).
  • The example of Jesus walking on water can be applied to our own spiritual journey.

Application

As you reflect on this passage, consider how you can apply the example of Peter walking on water to your own spiritual journey. Identify areas where you struggle with doubt or unbelief and choose to trust in God's guidance and sovereignty. Remember that faith is not just an emotional response but a choice to trust in God's character and promises.
