Practicing the Presence of Peace

As single parents, we often find ourselves juggling multiple responsibilities, from work to family to personal relationships. In the midst of these challenges, it's easy to feel overwhelmed and anxious. But what if we could learn to practice the presence of peace, even in the midst of chaos?

Scripture Foundation

In Matthew 6:25-27, Jesus teaches us to "do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, will you be clothed. Is not life more than food, and your body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?" (NIV)

In Philippians 4:6-7, Paul encourages us to "do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." (NIV)

In Isaiah 26:3, we're reminded that "You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you." (NIV)

And in John 14:27, Jesus says, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." (NIV)

Main Content

So, how can we learn to practice the presence of peace in our daily lives? Here are a few practical steps:

  • Take a few minutes each day to sit quietly and focus on your breath. As you breathe in and out, repeat a simple prayer like "Lord, I trust in you" or "God, I surrender my anxiety to you."
  • As you go about your daily tasks, intentionally look for ways to trust in God's provision. For example, as you prepare dinner, thank God for the food on your table and the people who helped make it possible.
  • When worries arise, pause and ask yourself if they're based on facts or fears. If they're fears, remind yourself of God's promises and His presence with you.
  • Practice gratitude by writing down three things you're thankful for each day. This helps shift your focus from what's lacking to what's abundant.
