Practicing Presence
Scripture Foundation
Matthew 6:25-34 says, "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?" (NIV)
In Romans 12:1-2, we're encouraged to "present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds." (NIV)
Colossians 3:2-3 reminds us to "set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. For your life is now hidden with Christ in God." (NIV)
And in 1 Corinthians 4:2, Paul writes, "Now it is required to govern the body, not the other way around. Those who are self-controlled and alert are guarding the Master's plans." (MSG)
Main Content
Practicing presence involves cultivating mindfulness in our daily lives. Three ways to do this include:
- Mindful breathing: Take a few minutes each day to focus on your breath, letting go of distractions and worries.
- Body scan: Pay attention to your physical sensations, noticing areas of tension or relaxation.
- Sensory exploration: Engage your senses by paying attention to sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and textures.
When we let go of anxiety and focus on the present moment, we can experience a greater sense of peace. In Romans 12:1-2, we're encouraged to present our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God.
Being rooted in Christ means setting our hearts on things above and hiding our lives with Christ in God (Colossians 3:2-3). This allows us to live from a place of humility and surrender.
When making decisions, we should ask ourselves, "What would Jesus do?" or "Is this aligning with God's plans?" (1 Corinthians 4:2). This principle of humility helps us navigate life's challenges.
