Embracing the Habit of Hope

Hope is a gift from God, a fruit of the Holy Spirit that can transform our lives. In this exercise, we'll explore the biblical concept of hope, cultivate a habit of gratitude, and develop a personal plan to cultivate hope in a specific area of our lives.

Scripture Foundation

"May the God of hope grant you a rich welcome, a spirit of affection and a heartfelt renewal as you wait for Jesus Christ" (Romans 15:13). The Bible speaks of hope as a gift from God, a divine attribute that empowers us to face life's challenges with confidence. In Jeremiah 29:11, God promises, "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope." Colossians 1:5 reminds us that Christ "became a minister in behalf of the Gentiles, to present to God a cause of rejoicing in connection with the reception of the completion of the things being set forth by God in connection with the things kept in store for you." Lamentations 3:21-24 encourages us to remember God's mercies and to hope in His steadfast love.

Main Content

Hope is not just a feeling or an emotion; it's a choice we make. It's a deliberate decision to trust in God's goodness, sovereignty, and love. As we cultivate a habit of gratitude, we'll become more aware of God's presence and provision in our lives. Take a few minutes to journal three things God has done in your life. Be specific and detailed. What did He do? How did it impact you? How did it make you feel? As you reflect on these experiences, ask yourself: What does this reveal about God's character? What does it teach me about His love and care for me? How can I apply this knowledge to my current situation? Take a few more minutes to identify one biblical promise or verse that brings you hope and encouragement. What does it mean to you? How can you apply it to your life?
