Opening Reflection
As we embark on this journey of faith, we often find ourselves facing challenges that test our resolve and push us to our limits. It's in these moments that we're tempted to lose heart, to give up and throw in the towel. But the apostle Paul reminds us that we're not alone in this struggle.
Scripture Focus
"Not that I have already attained this or am already perfected, but I press on to make up for the lack. I was once making progress, but another's knowledge I have the righteousness that comes from God—based on faith." — Philippians 3:12-13 (NLT)
Main Message
In Philippians 3:12-13, Paul reveals his own struggles with imperfection. He acknowledges that he hasn't yet attained perfection, and that he's still making progress. But he doesn't let this realization discourage him. Instead, he chooses to press on, driven by a desire to make up for his shortcomings and to know Christ more intimately.
We can learn from Paul's example. When we're faced with our own imperfections, we can choose to give up or to press on. We can choose to focus on our failures or to fix our eyes on Jesus. As Paul says in Romans 5:3-4, "We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope." Our struggles can be opportunities for growth and transformation, if we allow them to be.
Hebrews 12:1 encourages us to "fix our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith." When we focus on Jesus, we're reminded that He is the one who is perfect, and that He is the one who helps us to overcome our imperfections. Matthew 5:48 says, "You are therefore to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect." This isn't a call to achieve perfection in our own strength, but rather a call to trust in God's power and provision.
So as we navigate the ups and downs of life, let's choose to press on, just as Paul did. Let's fix our eyes on Jesus and trust in His perfecting work in us. Let's not be discouraged by our imperfections, but instead, let's use them as opportunities to grow and become more like Him.
