Finding God's Comfort in Difficult Times

In this study, we'll explore the Psalms of comfort and learn how to pray through difficult emotions using biblical language.

Scripture Reading and Analysis

Psalm 23:1-6 (NIV) says, "The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows." (emphasis added)

In Psalm 23, David expresses his trust in God as his shepherd, highlighting God's provision and guidance. The psalmist acknowledges that even in difficult times, God is present and provides comfort.

Main Teaching

God's Presence in Our Hardship

The psalmist's confidence in God's presence is rooted in their understanding of God's character. In Psalm 46:1-11 (NIV), we read, "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." (emphasis added)

God's presence is not limited to times of peace and prosperity. He is our rock, our stronghold, and our hope in the midst of turmoil.

Main Teaching

Praying Through Difficult Emotions

When we're faced with hardship, we often struggle to find words to express our emotions. In Psalm 91:1-16 (NIV), we see an example of David's prayer in times of trouble:

"You who dwell in the shelter of the Most High abide in the shadow of the Almighty. Say to the Lord, 'My refuge and my rock in whom I trust.' This God—the Lord—is my rock and my salvation; he is my God, and I highly exalt him. The Lord is my rock, my strength and my redeemer; my God is my rock, I trust him; my God is my rock, I trust him. Not one of them will stumble. You will tread on the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent. 'Because he loves me,' says the Lord, 'I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him." (emphasis added)

Notice how David doesn't try to hide his emotions or pretend they don't exist. Instead, he expresses them honestly and asks God for help and protection. This model can guide our own prayers when we're struggling:

Discussion Questions
