Faithful Focus: Overcoming Fear and Doubt
Scripture Reading and Analysis
In Matthew 14:31, Jesus walks on the water, and the disciples are terrified. But Jesus speaks to them, saying, "Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid." (Matthew 14:27)
This passage highlights the importance of faith in overcoming fear. When the disciples are faced with the daunting task of walking on the water, they are paralyzed with fear. But Jesus' words of reassurance give them the confidence to trust in Him.
Similarly, in Luke 17:6, Jesus teaches us to have faith like a mustard seed, which is small but powerful. He says, "If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, 'Go and make yourself into a tree, and then you will be pulling yourself up by the roots, lifting yourself by the branches.'" (Luke 17:6)
This passage emphasizes the importance of having a small but significant amount of faith. When we have faith, we can accomplish great things, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles.
In Romans 4:20-21, Paul writes about Abraham's faith as an example for us. He says, "No distrust made him waver, trusting so as to be justified by faith he did not waver when he was given the promise. He grew strong in his worship and gave praise to God being fully convinced that God is able to do what he has promised." (Romans 4:20-21)
This passage highlights the importance of trust in developing a faithful focus. When we trust in God's promises, we can overcome even the greatest of challenges.
Finally, in Hebrews 12:2, we read that Jesus "who for the joy set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God." (Hebrews 12:2)
This passage emphasizes the importance of perseverance in developing a faithful focus. When we fix our eyes on Jesus, we can overcome even the greatest of challenges.
Main Teaching
So how can we develop a faithful focus to overcome fear and doubt? First, we must recognize that faith is not the absence of fear, but rather the ability to trust in God despite our fears. As we've seen in our scripture reading, Jesus encourages us to take heart and not be afraid.
Secondly, we must learn to trust in God's promises. When we trust in God's promises, we can overcome even the greatest of challenges. As Paul writes in Romans 4:20-21, Abraham's faith was not based on his own strength or abilities, but on God's promises.
Finally, we must persevere in our faith. As we fix our eyes on Jesus, we can overcome even the greatest of challenges. In Hebrews 12:2, Jesus endured the cross for the joy set before him, and we too can endure our own trials with perseverance.
