When the disciples saw Jesus walking on the water, they were terrified and exclaimed, "It's a ghost!" But Jesus immediately said to them, "Take heart! It is I. Don't be afraid." They were so consumed by fear that they forgot who Jesus was – the one who had fed the five thousand, healed the sick, and calmed the storm. Their focus had shifted from the Lord to their circumstances. Similarly, in our own lives, we often find ourselves losing focus on Christ. We become distracted by the world around us, and our hearts begin to waver. But what if we were to fix our eyes on Jesus, just as the disciples did when they remembered who He was? In Colossians 3:2, Paul writes, "Set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God." This verse reminds us that our hearts must be fixed on heavenly things – on Christ – if we are to live a life pleasing to Him. In Hebrews 12:2, we're encouraged to "fix our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith." Rather, it's one that has learned to fix its eyes on Jesus in the midst of failure and setbacks. It's a heart that has learned to trust in His goodness and sovereignty. Let us not be distracted by the world around us, but rather keep our hearts and minds fixed on the One who is our constant guide and perfecter of faith.
