Embracing Balance: Work and Rest
Scripture Reading and Analysis
In Exodus 20:8-11, we read: "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your alien who sojourns with you. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and on the seventh day He rested. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy."
In Hebrews 4:9-11, we read: "So then a sabbath rest remains for the people of God. For the one who has entered His rest has also ceased from his works as God did from His works. Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience."
In Psalm 23:4, we read: "Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over."
In Genesis 2:2-3, we read: "By the seventh day God finished His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day. And God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made."
Main Teaching
The Bible teaches us that work is a good thing. In Genesis 2:2-3, we see that God worked for six days to create the world and then rested on the seventh day. This pattern is repeated throughout human history – we work for six days and then rest on the seventh. This is not just a physical necessity but also a spiritual one.
The Sabbath is not just a day off from work but a day of rest for our souls. It's a time to recharge, reflect on our lives, and connect with God. In Hebrews 4:9-11, we're reminded that God rested from His works and blessed the Sabbath day. We too can enter into that rest by ceasing from our works and trusting in God's provision.
As we navigate our daily routines, we must make time for rest and relaxation. Just as a shepherd guides his sheep to green pastures and still waters (Psalm 23:2), God guides us to a place of comfort and peace. He prepares a table before us and anoints our heads with oil (Psalm 23:5). We can trust in His guidance and provision as we learn to embrace balance between work and rest.
